Gimenez Mendez 100 Anos Tannat 75cl
Grape: Tannat
Alcohol: 13.5%
As Decanter recently wrote, "Could Tannat become the new Malbec?" With Uruguayan wines as impressive as this, it seems very likely. Tannat makes up 25% of Uruguay's plantings - it's the only country in the world to adopt the variety as its flagship grape. Its thick skins produce too much tannin in most climates, but here it suits the Atlantic-cooled vineyards perfectly. From a winery awarded the 'World's Best Tannat', this is a fabulous new find. It's from Gimenez Mendez, an estate founded by husband and wife team Luis Alberto Gimenez and Marta Mendez. Marta is, in fact, one of the prime movers in Uruguay's wine industry. Hand picked grapes, carefully fermented and aged in oak produces a lovely balance in the wine. A definite for steak!
